Almost, Maine by John Cariani - 2-10m, 2-9w, flexible

Welcome to Almost, Maine, a town that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States—it’s almost in Canada. And it almost doesn’t exist. Because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it’s just…Almost.

One cold, clear Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. And life for the people of Almost, Maine will never be the same.

ALMOST, MAINE: It’s love. But not quite.

This is a very sweet play with nine different couples talking about finding love. One of the couples is two males It would easily work in the round. It appeals to all age groups, and I think it would especially work in the February time slot around Valentine's Day. It's not ground-breaking, but I say yes.

When I saw the play consisted of a number of vignettes about love, I thought about our production of "La Ronde", which we produced about 30 years ago. This play from around 1900 contains around 10 vignettes dealing with the sexual relationships between members of different classes of German society. "Almost Maine" is definitely not that. I read that this show is a favorite of community theaters and schools (when not prohibited because of the relationship between two males) to produce.

The show is light and quirky. It isn't what I typically expect to see a TRP. I do not have strong feelings about the script. If the majority would like to produce it, I would keep it in the mix to see how it might fit into the season.

It's a nice script. I agree with Jean that it would work in the February time slot around Valentine's Day.

It's a sweet little script. Not groundbreaking - agreed. A bit overproduced, but mostly in the community and school worlds. Would it work to have it produced as a director showcase?

We’ve looked at this script before and it hasn’t gotten much support. I’ve seen a few productions over the years and while some of the vignettes can be charming for the most part they always struck me as trite. I agree with Larisa that the show is mostly produced by schools and traditional community theaters, and for good reason.
