Shakin the Blue Flamingo - 7w

Seven charming and sometimes fiery Southern lesbians volunteer to plan the first LGBTQ prom for the local high school students. The twenty-some years of life since college has not dulled the jealousy and unrequited love of a few of the old friends. A successful sorority sister returns to town determined to romance the woman she has loved all of her life. Grief and mourning are on full display as the lovers expose their separate pain. As prom night arrives, plans unravel, infidelities are revealed and these women are forced to confront their fears and unspoken dreams.

I did enjoy this script, but it's not at the top of my list. I felt that the relationship between Rosemary and Mac was hard to be invested in and could have been more developed...the plot could've used more action instead of so much dialogue.

I feel like this script needs more development. The characters are interesting, well thought out and good relationships to each other, however the exposition is clunky and I still didn't feel like I had enough background to root for Rosemary and Mac, even though it is their story. I also wasn't a fan of these middle-aged women holding so tightly to things that happened 25+ years before without a new maturity or perspective. Maybe that is just because I am very midwestern and this is set in the South - I'm not used to talking about their conflicts and feelings so bluntly. I think we can do better than this.

Not for me. I don't care about what happened to them 25 years ago, or what their relationship was now.

I thought it had a lot going for it. It had good humor and a decent enough story, although similar to many in this genre. It should be a breeze to stage as there is only one basic set, a cafe. The director would need to be careful about cast placement so that you don't always see the same backs of people sitting at the table(s) etc. And I would ignore most of the director's notes about costumes and staging etc. so that it fits correctly in the round and with the cast that is selected.

I wanted to like this one, but it never came together for me. I found the dialogue trite and the stakes were never high enough. So it's a "no" for me.
