so, admittedly not a musical theatre person but I do appreciate much of Sondheim's work for his complexity in story and character and challenging music - but oof, some of the songs in this - as a woman, I don't want to listen to a lot of the nonsense being sung here. Some of the book made my skin crawl.
I felt the same way as Linda Sue. Some of the numbers were very sexist and creepy. But it is Sondheim, and we haven't done a musical revue in quite a while. I'd like to find a better choice.
The first show I saw at TRP was Into the Woods when I came to visit a friend before I moved here (her roommate played the Baker) and I would love a musical in the season and would love to do several different Sondheims (Company, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park), but I do not like this review. If we are going to do a musical - I would rather do a musical or some interesting take on material and I do not think this is it.
I didn't have any feelings about this one way or the other. I asked to add it to the blog because Dan Foss had been scheduled to direct it in the spring of 2020 but it was canceled due to the pandemic. He has indicated that he still was interested in directing it. I agree that we could find better musicals to consider, should we decide that we would like to do a musical.
I agree that this isn't for us. I have general concerns about musicals with the added costs of musical director, pianist, royalties, and lost seats, especially with a show that isn't likely to attract audiences.
I agree with what others have been saying: there’s a lot of misogyny in these songs. Maybe this revue is meant to have a commentary of the misogyny within high society, but I still don’t care for it. The misogyny doesn’t really feel condemned within the revue, and it seems endless at times. #7 “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid” just screamed Pygmalion for three agonizing minutes. And that’s just the first misogynistic song. I’m sure this would sell because it would have people singing and it’s Sondheim’s music, but I’d love to pick a different piece if we want something with music.
Agreed. This one isn't for me. The Last 5 Years (only 2 actors) or Songs for a New World might be a better musical choice for us. This review didn't really do it for me. Or Islander (2 women play all the roles and there are no other musicians to hire.)

Sounds like this isn't a winner. I love Sondheim, but agree. Maybe we look at Songs for a New World for a different type of musical review.
