I wasn't sure of this was a comedy or a drama at first. The characters were so "big" and diverse. You are drawn into the story, however, and the relationships that are revealed. It could work as long as the actors do not portray stereotypes. The set and sound effects would also have to make us feel like we're in a hot, sultry rain forest. A good challenge for designers! Yes for me.
I'm torn. The ending of this piece left me unsatisfied. I saw it at the Guthrie during its final in the old space, but I couldn't remember much about it. Now after reading it, I see why it didn't leave a huge impression. A solid script, but not his best. I'm also concerned about some of the casting. A 97 yr old man is a bit hard to pull off in the arena and some of the extras may be a challenge. Another concern I have is the timing of this piece feels wrong. I'm not sure we want to produce it right now. I guess I'm leaning more towards no than yes.
I love this play. One of my all time favorites. Loved it when I designed it last time we did it. Rod Kleis played Nono, so casting is no problem. Yes!
Williams is a familiar name and the title might be familiar to some. Unfortunately, I have a hard time getting excited about this script. I have a hard time relating to, or caring much about the characters. I suspect audiences are more likely to relate to some of his other plays such as "Streetcar …..", "Cat …. ", or "Glass Menagerie". If others feel strongly about this script, I won't object, but for now I am a no.
A seminal work of American theater that I had not previously read or seen. The characters are amazing, I think actors would come out of the woodwork to play these roles. I want to play the German father! Single location can be adapted to the arena. I can that some people may find the ending dis-satisfyingly unresolved because it lacks action, but that's kind of the point... As in Nono's poem, the characters, after their zenith is past, will begin a "second history."
Hot steamy jungle, good place to be during winter in Minneapolis.
It took a long time to set up the premise.
Though a lesser known play, it was a movie which provides some title recognition.
My vote is yes.
I loved the last TRP production, and I loved the Guthrie production a number of years ago. I think this one is definitely a classic we should do.
